Cedar Fencing in Meridian, Idaho

Meridian Quality Fence builds cedar fence in Meridian when the owner wants western red instead of a tan panel or a pine board that cooks. Privacy, picket, and cap-and-trim all work in cedar. The species is the point of this page.

Call (208) 925-2582 if you want cedar called out on the quote, not a generic wood line. We bid western red by the board.

New cedar privacy fence in a backyard

Cedar Fence Options for Meridian Properties

Western red privacy boards

1x6 cedar on three rails, six feet, with a cap if you want the end grain covered. This is the backyard screen in a species that can take UV. Face one side or overlap. We still set real posts. Pretty boards on skinny posts lean.

Clear-grade caps and trim

A cap rail and dog-ear or a square top with a 1x2 trim. Clear grade is for the parts you see from the patio. Tight-knot can stay on the field. Mixing grades on purpose looks better than pretending a knotty run is clear.

Oil finish after the hang

Oil or a penetrating stain after the boards dry. This is a separate day. Wet cedar under a film is how you get peel. We can skip the finish if you want silver. We will not roll a film on Saturday if the hang was Friday in irrigation spray.

Cedar picket on the street face

Shorter picket in cedar along the walk. Spacing and a small gate are the job. It photographs warmer than vinyl picket. It also needs the same post discipline as any other front run. We do not nail cedar to a leaning leftover 4x4.

How We Handle Cedar Fencing in Meridian

  1. Confirm grade: tight-knot versus clear, and whether a cap is in the bid.
  2. Measure and check slope so long boards do not step unless you want steps.
  3. Set treated or cedar posts. Concrete at corners and gates.
  4. Hang rails, then cedar. Face and fasteners as quoted.
  5. Schedule oil only after the boards have dried.

Cedar dust is real. We keep it off the patio as we can. Offcuts go in the haul, not under the deck. End grain at cuts gets the same respect as the face. That is the species you paid for.

Materials and Methods

Western red cedar 1x6 and 1x4. Tight-knot or clear. Cap boards. 2x4 rails, cedar or treated. Posts 4x4 or 6x6, often treated at grade even when the pickets are cedar. Stainless or hot-dip galvanized nails and screws. Stainless looks cleaner on red wood. Interior bright nails rust and bleed. Concrete. String. A sharp blade so end cuts do not fuzz. We keep the cup facing the weather the way the mill intends. We reject boards with through-splits. Oil is a penetrating product, not a porch paint. This valley is semi-arid and often over 100 F in summer, so thin pine cooks. Cedar is the species that belongs in that sun if you are paying for wood on purpose.

Posts in the ground are AWPA U1 UC4A treated, not above-ground UC3B. Cedar pickets are above-grade wood. Rails are 2x4. Fasteners are hot-dip galvanized or stainless. Wood still uses a string, plumb, and concrete at terminals. 4x4 line posts, 6x6 at gates. Gravel in wet holes. Hangers on rails. Sprinkler wetting at grade is the rot mode.

We stack cedar off the dirt on site. Boards that sit in irrigation overnight take a wave. We also sort for grain so a run of wild grain does not sit next to a calm face unless that is the look you want. Fastener lines stay straight. A wandering nail line is what makes a custom hang look like a weekend kit. On west-facing runs we talk about oil in the first season, not as a scare, as a maintenance note. Skip it and the board still works. It just goes silver faster. Caps are worth it here because rain is light but irrigation is not. End grain at the top drinks sprinkler overspray. A cap sheds that.

What Cedar Fencing Costs in Meridian

Angi's wood band of 10 to 45 per linear foot is the national envelope cedar sits in, usually toward the higher half. Fixr's installed wood range of 15 to 35 per linear foot still applies, with cedar above treated pine on the same design. Thumbtack's wood range of 15 to 45 per linear foot is the same story. Grade, cap trim, and oil are the extras. We quote western red. We do not hide pine in a cedar bid.

Cedar, vinyl, and iron on Meridian plats that still allow wood

Cedar fencing shows up in Meridian when the packet allows wood or when the owner wants western red instead of a tan PVC panel. South-belt HOAs often freeze vinyl color and cap on the backyard. Older streets near downtown, larger Eagle lots, and some Hidden Springs homes still take cedar privacy or picket. The species is the point. Thin pine cups in this sun. Cedar holds longer if posts stay dry at grade.

Wind on a six-foot solid cedar run is a real sail. We set 4x4 or 6x6 posts in concrete, use hangers on rails, and keep corners and gates heavier than line posts. A pretty hang on skinny posts leans after the first valley wind. Freeze-thaw moves shallow footings the same way it moves vinyl and iron. Depth and concrete matter more than species once January hits.

Irrigation overspray at the dirt line is what kills wood here, not the light rain. Move the head or keep a dry collar at the post. Caps cover end grain so sprinkler mist does not drink into the top of every picket. Oil after the hang is optional. Raw cedar goes silver. Film stain on wet boards peels. We hang dry when we can and leave finish off the bid if you want color locked.

Vinyl vs cedar is usually an HOA call, not a taste argument. If the sheet names PVC, cedar will not pass review even if it photographs warmer. Ornamental iron on the street with cedar privacy behind the house is a common split on custom lots. Say both so we bid two materials. We do not paint cedar black and call it iron, or hang pine inside a cedar quote.

Pins and shared lines matter on production plats. Neighbor fences are not always on the line. We mark before we dig. Good-neighbor versus board-on-board belongs in the quote. Slope on fill lots means rack the rails or step on purpose. A forced level run leaves a dog gap.

Call (208) 925-2582 with the town, the packet page if you have one, and photos of the line.

Questions

Why cedar instead of treated pine?

Western red holds this sun and this dry air better than cheap pine that cups in one season. It costs more per board. It also takes oil or stain if you want the color to stay. Pine is a valid bid when the packet allows it. Cedar is the upgrade people search.

Do I have to stain a cedar fence?

No. Raw cedar weathers to silver. Oil keeps the red. A film stain can peel if the board was wet when you rolled it. We can hang dry and leave the finish off the bid. Say what you want the color to do.

Is tight-knot cedar good enough?

Tight-knot is the common grade here. Clear cedar is a different price. Knots that are tight stay in the board. Loose knots fall out and leave holes. We reject junk boards. We do not sell clear when you asked for tight-knot.

Will cedar rot at the posts?

The boards are cedar. The posts are often treated 4x4 or 6x6 because that is what holds in concrete. Cedar posts exist. They still fail at grade if a sprinkler soaks them. Keep water off the dirt line. Name the town and the job when you call.

Will my Meridian HOA allow cedar if neighbors have vinyl?

Only if the packet allows wood. Many south-belt sheets freeze tan or clay vinyl on backyard privacy. Older streets and some custom plats still allow cedar. Send the page before we order boards. Matching the neighbor is not the same as matching the association.

Does cedar need deeper posts than vinyl for wind here?

Solid cedar and solid vinyl both act like sails in valley wind. Post size, depth, and concrete at corners and gates matter on both. Cedar boards do not change the footing math. Shallow posts fail the same way after freeze-thaw whether the face is wood or PVC.
